What Exactly Is a Life Coach?

What Exactly Is a Life Coach?

I get this question from time to time because most people aren’t really sure what a life coach is or what a life coach does. I didn’t either before I became one.

Honestly, I thought the job sounded pretty hokey—kind of a cross between a fortune-teller and drill sergeant. It’s horrible to admit, but I thought the people who had their own life coaches were confused, weak-willed, and desperate individuals who needed someone to tell them how to live their life.

YeahI could not have been more wrong.

As Frederic Hudson defines in his book, The Handbook of Coaching,

“A coach is someone trained and devoted to guiding others into increased competence, commitment, and confidence.”

As I started to meet some real life coaches, I found them to be impressive business owners, who had been professionally trained in the discipline of coaching, with a passion for helping others live at their fullest potential. Instead of using tarot cards or bullhorns, they used personality tests and value assessments, powerful questions, and proven techniques based on brain research and positive psychology.

And their clients weren’t broken, in need of fixing. They were, in fact, motivated and in need of change.

I was sold.

I spent a year in classes and practicums to get my coaching certification. I worked with mentor coaches and started my own coaching practice. I pursued and completed the first of three levels of accreditation in order to bring the highest level of professionalism and quality to my coaching clients.

After more than 3000 hours of coaching, I’ve developed a specialty with ambitious, purpose-driven women. They are nothing like the “confused, weak-willed, and desperate” people I had originally imagined.

Instead, my clients are courageous humans,

Who want to learn more about their personalities incapabilities

Who want to pursue their passions and their purpose

Who want to live intentionally with less stress and greaterbalance,

Who want to improve their relationships at home and at work,

Who want to overcome insecurities and negative thoughtpatterns,

Who want to align their jobs and their lives with theirfaith.

For the last 11 years I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of clients—providing guidance, accountability, encouragement, clarity, direction, and most of all—hope.

Coaching works.

Change can and does happen.

It has for my clients. And it certainly has for me.

If you would like to find out how life coaching could help you live your life to the full, give it a try. It’s easy, it’s fast, and it’s free.
